8. Jane McGonigal: Gaming can make a better world - Portfolio #2 (Extra)

Epic Win in Jane McGonigal Speech.

Jane McGonigal: Gaming can make a better world.

Jane McGonigal, she is a Game designer with experience of 10 years on designing online games.

Her goal is to make it easy to save the real world as it easy to save the virtual world in online game.

The classic game emotion is the Epic Win is presented as sign while she talk. Epic Win is an outcome that is so positive you wouldn't think you can make it.

Epic Win is the face that we need to see while solving problem of the world.  Opposite to it is I'm not good at live which we have to fight. Gamers tend to have Epic Win face in virtual gaming world while in real world many tend to be not good at.
This is because while gaming we are best on confronting obstacles.

She stated that we need to take those good feelings from game environment to the real live.

She had World of War Craft as an example this game that there players played over 5.93 million years of total gaming. This is the same 5.93 million years ago that historian  said the first man stud. This can indicate time spent while gaming can led to evolving by time.

Statistics indicate that an average gamer in USA spent 10.000 hours gaming by the time he reach 21 years.
This is almost the same time he spent studying from 5th grade till he finish high school if he had a perfect attendance the time is 10,080 hours.

Also in Theory of Success by Malcolm glad he wrote that if you spent 10,000 hours working or studying something or a subject you will virtue on it and you will grate on it. He call it the 10,000 hours of success.

The introduce of new gaming system that is low in power consumption and use mobile internet will add  a billion new user to the grid. Imagine if there is a away to teach them by gaming how useful this will be.

What game make us good at?

1- urgent optimism:

Which is self optimization to solve problem with hope that we have grate chance to solve it.

2- social fabric;
Study showed that we like people better after we play game with them, so playing games together build bond and trust.

3-blissful production:

Gamers have no problem playing a game for 22 hours if they are good at which is better than sitting or laying down.

4-Epic meaning:

WOW by help of users built a wiki for gamers that is as large as the current Wikis. This is an Epic effort of cooperation.

Gamer are Super, Empowered and helpful individuals. They can change world, but the virtual worlds for sure. Jane is trying to solve this and help them by gaming to change the real world as they do in virtual ones.

"We are witnessing what an amount to no less than a mass exodus to virtual worlds and online game environment" Economist Edward castronova.

How solve problems with game?.

Before 2500 years people invented a dice from the sheep knuckles this was during the time of Lydia people. Lydia people was suffering from famine. So the king decided to make a law that in one day people will eat but in the other will only play games because of that they survived the famine for 18 years. In the end he divided the whole country in to two teams and both will play a game which the winner will have to leave the land and let the rest survive with what supply they have. New findings indicate that the Roman descended from Lydian who Travel after winning which make the story true and ligament.

Jane started making games which teach people and help them cooperate with each others.
1- World without oil: a game teach people how they can live without oil and what will effect them if the oil stopped.
2-Super struct: in this game the human race will extinct. People will team up to invent how the future of human species will be.
3-Evoke: a game which promote the cooperation between players  to solve problem that they facing.

She continue in our deathbeds are we going to regret the time we spent while playing games.?

Hospice Workers which are the people who take care of people in the end of there life issued a report about the top five most frequently expressed regrets that people express in there deathbeds these are the top Five:

3- a 30 minute online game can outperform pharmaceuticals for treating clinical anxiety and depression a university study prove it.
4-Playing with the right Avatars can change how we think and act in real life.

5- fifth one left with a question mark for farther explanation.

Why she talk about deathbeds?

Jane spent three month in bed waiting to die.!

She hit her head and got a Concussion which didn't heal properly and resulted on many symptoms like nonstop headache, Nausea, Memory loss and Mental fog.

Doctor told her that in order to heal the concussion the Brain should rest which mean no Reading, Writing and no video gaming.

It meant to her no reason to live.

Suicidal idea is quite common with traumatic brain injuries. It happen to one out of three.

She had those suicidal thoughts. and started to fear for her life.

After 34 Days she said either i will kill my self or turn this into a game.

Why a Game?
From Researches she know when we play game we tackles challenges with more creativity, determination, optimism and easily reach out for help.

She created a game named Jane the Concussion Slayer. This become her new Secret Identity. She called her sisters to play with her which is an easy way to ask for help and later her husband join them.

The bed guys in the game was any think that will trigger her symptoms and slow down the healing process. Things like bright light and crowded spaces.

A power-ups are then added to the game. which can be collected to make her feel good. such as cuddling her dog for 10 minutes or walking around the block.

She summarize her game by the following:

1- Adopt a secret identity.
2- Recruit your allies.
3-Battle the bed guys.
4- Activate the Power-Ups.

After a couple of days playing depression and anxiety went a way. It took her a full hard year to totally recover.

She wanted to share her experience with world and but it in a blog and renamed it to SUPER BETTER.

Many people start playing it adopting there own secret identity to fight there illness.

It helped them.

How the game helped them ?

People get stronger and happier after a traumatic events studies shows and they call it Post-Traumatic Growth.

Those are the direct opposite to the top five regrets of deathbeds.

Traumatic event can unlock our ability to lead a life with fewer regrets.
